What is Momme?
Momme (mm) is the unit of measurement traditionally used to measure the quality of silk fabrics. In simplest terms, momme measures the density of silk. A silk thread density of 25 momme is significantly higher than the 16 momme or 19 momme in silk fabric.
1 momme = 4,340 grams per square metre;
16 momme = 69 grams per square metre;
19 momme = 82 grams per square metre;
22 momme = 95 grams per square metre;
25 momme = 108 grams per square metre.
The higher the momme value, the denser, stiffer and higher quality the fabric will be, hence the higher the cost.
25 Momme silk products contain approximately 32% more silk than silk products containing 19 Momme.
What is the silk thickness of our products?
We use 25 Momme silk for our silk nightwear and all our silk accessories, but our silk pillowcases come in two qualities - both 25 MM and 22 MM.
We have the option to buy both 22 Momme and 25 Momme silk pillowcases to give a wider choice for customers who are not primarily concerned with silk thickness, but rather with colour variety or their budget.
If we talk about silk bed linen then we offer it in an even higher “Lux” quality - 28 Momme, woven in jacquard and satin techniques, making this one of the world's premium silk bed linens.
Why do we recommend 25 Momme silk?
Higher Momme makes the fabric less sheer, it will last considerably longer, is noticeably nicer to the touch and has a deeper, more vibrant colour.
25 Momme silk fabric is heavier, thicker and more durable, ideal for nightwear and bed linen.
I want to buy silk bed linen, what should I look out for?
If you want to buy silk bed linen, it is also very important to pay attention to the Momme, we recommend choosing 25 Momme to 30 Momme silk for your bed linen because, as mentioned above, it will be more durable, softer as well as heavier, so it will last longer. Many people may think that care is more complicated, but it is not, care is just as easy and can be done at home.
Our advice to customers
Our advice to customers is to always pay attention to how much 'momme' silk you are buying and in particular beware of merchants who do not indicate the 'momme' value of their products, as there is almost always only 1 reason for this - it is very low.
This is the most important thing when buying silk products, so that you do not feel disappointed when you receive and use the product, and so that your impression of silk products is not spoiled. We have often heard from customers that buying silk pillowcases or silk nightwear elsewhere and not paying attention to the quality is a big disappointment because the silk pillowcases or nightwear wash out quickly and lose their “softness”!
