When we started SilkWide, we ordered, washed, and slept on dozens of different silk samples. We quickly learned that a truly great silk pillowcase isn’t just about a shiny finish - it’s about the density, the grading, and how the fabric holds up after months of washing. That hands-on testing is exactly why we only use 100% pure mulberry silk in a premium 23 momme weight.
For Your Hair: Standard cotton pillowcases grip and tug at your hair cuticles as you toss and turn. This nightly friction is a leading cause of morning frizz, tangles, and split ends. Because our pure silk is practically frictionless, your hair glides smoothly over the surface. You’ll wake up with smoother hair, and your salon blowouts or natural curls will last much longer.
For Your Skin: Cotton is highly absorbent - it’s designed to soak up moisture. That means it draws natural oils and expensive night creams right off your face and into your pillow. Our mulberry silk is significantly less absorbent, ensuring your skincare products stay on your skin where they belong. Furthermore, the completely smooth surface prevents the pulling and tugging that causes “sleep creases” - those morning lines that can eventually turn into permanent wrinkles.
In the silk industry, momme measures the weight and density of the fabric, while the “Grade” measures the quality of the fibers themselves. We exclusively source Grade 6A long-strand mulberry silk because it is the highest quality available. The fibers are longer and more uniform, which prevents the fabric from pilling or thinning out over time.
We pair that Grade 6A fiber with a 23 momme weight. Lighter weights (like 19 momme) are prone to tearing, while heavier weights (like 30 momme) can feel stiff. In our experience, 23 momme hits the exact sweet spot: it is substantial and highly durable, yet remains incredibly fluid and soft against your skin.
Not all pillowcases treat your hair and skin the same way. Cotton is highly absorbent and creates friction, which can draw moisture away from your face and leave your hair rough and tangled by morning.
Satin, on the other hand, may look similar to silk, but it is not a natural fabric. It is simply a weaving technique, almost always made from cheap synthetic polyester. Because polyester is essentially plastic, it traps heat, causes you to sweat, and completely lacks the breathability and natural protein structure of real silk.
Mulberry silk is entirely different. Its perfectly smooth surface allows your hair to glide easily, which helps reduce tugging, frizz, and unnecessary stress while you sleep. Because it is a natural protein fiber, pure silk is also naturally antibacterial and hypoallergenic, providing a cleaner, more hygienic resting surface that actively resists bacteria and helps prevent skin breakouts. It feels cooler, softer, and naturally regulates your temperature - allowing your skin to breathe in the summer and keeping you comfortable in the winter - making it a simple but meaningful upgrade to your nightly routine.
A silk pillowcase is a deeply personal item, which is why we ensure the unboxing experience reflects the quality of the product. Every SilkWide pillowcase is packaged in a premium magnetic gift box, making it a beautiful, ready-to-give present for yourself or a loved one.
Because this fabric touches your face for eight hours every night, transparency is our top priority. Every SilkWide pillowcase is strictly OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified. This independent certification guarantees that our silk has been rigorously tested and is completely free from harmful chemicals, toxins, and artificial dyes. Combined with silk’s natural resistance to dust mites and bacteria, this makes our pillowcases the perfect, hygienic choice for highly sensitive or acne-prone skin.
We know that caring for pure silk can feel intimidating. Through our own washing tests, we learned that proper care is the secret to making silk last for years. That is why we include a free silk wash mesh bag with every single pillowcase order to protect the fibers in the washing machine. For the absolute best results, we highly recommend washing your pillowcase in cool water using Tenestar silk wash detergent (which we use ourselves and sell in our store).
